NPA in Racehorse Care and Management at SCQF level 6

This National Progression Award (NPA) introduces learners to techniques that are important in the racehorse sector.

It develops the practical, technical and transferable skills required for stable yard management and racehorse care and allows learners to demonstrate how these can be applied in practice.

This qualification is available through colleges and training providers.

NPAs can be taught as a full-time course over one year or as a part-time course over two years.

This National Progression Award consists of four mandatory units (24 SCQF credit points).

Mandatory units include:

  • Horse care: Horse Fittening
  • Working with Young Horses in Preparation for Ridden Work
  • Contribute to the Design and Implementation of Training Programmes for Racehorses
  • Evaluate Training Programmes for Racehorses

The NPA in Racehorse Care and Management is designed for a wide range of learners, including:

  • school leavers
  • adults returning to education

You will develop an understanding of the fundamental principles of stable yard management and racehorse care and how these can be applied in practice. This qualification is primarily aimed at learners within a work-based setting who are already well established in a senior role within racing.

  • mature candidates who have been out of education for a long period of time
  • individuals who are currently in employment and wish to obtain a formal qualification
  • those who are looking to access HN programmes

Access
Entry is at the discretion of the school, college or training provider. However, if you are thinking of entering the level 6 award, it is recommended that you should first have experience of working in the equine sector.

 

Employment and progression

You could use this level 6 award to progress to:

  • study at SCQF level 7
  • an HNC/HND in Equine Studies or a related area
  • employment in the racehorse sector
