NPA Hospitality SCQF level 6

This National Progression Award (NPA):

  • provides a more advanced treatment of the topics in the NPA at SCQF level 5. The key mandatory unit is about developing excellence in customer care, which lies at the heart of all successful hospitality businesses
  • introduces learners to the role of the team leader in hospitality
  • offers optional units covering specialist areas such as food and beverage service, reception and accommodation servicing
  • provides a foundation for those interested on progressing to college programmes such as the National Certificate (NC) in Hospitality Operations at SCQF level 6 or seeking an entry-level position in the hospitality industry

This qualification is typically offered in colleges or via school/college partnerships.

NPAs can be taught as a full-time or part-time course.

Resources

Industry relevant facilities appropriate to the content of the optional units delivered. This may include:

  • commercial grade restaurant facilities with appropriate equipment
  • access to 'real' customers for service and development of customer care and communication skills
  • appropriate classroom and ICT facilities to enable appropriate approaches to development of skills and knowledge (including research, and digital skills). This may include specialist software to support accommodation and front of house specialisms if these units are delivered

Why study this qualification

The NPA in Hospitality at SCQF level 6 is designed for a wide range of learners, including:

  • learners who are at school or who have just left school
  • adults returning to education
  • individuals who are currently in employment and wish to obtain a formal qualification
  • employees who want to develop their careers

The qualification is also suitable if you are interested in pursuing a career in the hospitality industry in a front of house role, or wish to progress to a course in hospitality at college

You will develop knowledge and understanding of the size and scope of the hospitality industry, as well as the practical skills required for team leaders in front and/or back of house roles.

You will also develop important Core Skills in Communication, Numeracy, Problem Solving, ICT and Working with Others, as well as employability skills for working in the hospitality industry in a team-leading role.

Access

Entry is at the discretion of the school, college or training provider. However, if you are thinking of entering the level 6 award it is recommended that you should first complete training at level 5.

Employment and progression

You could use this level 6 award to progress to:

  • further study at SCQF level 6/7
  • employment in the hospitality sector, perhaps as a team leader for food and beverage operations
