Assessment of National Courses from 2023-24

This table contains information on how National Courses will be assessed from 2023-24 onwards.

Most courses that had modifications to assessment during 2021-22 and 2022-23 have now returned to full assessment. We are keeping modifications to assessment in 28 courses where we have seen evidence that they had a positive impact while still allowing learners to show their skills, knowledge and understanding. Details of courses keeping modifications are included in the table below.

The course will be assessed as pass or fail and will be quality assured by SQA.
Applications of Mathematics	National 5	Learners will sit two exams: Exam: question paper 1 (non-calculator) Exam: question paper 2 We are keeping the following modifications to assessment: Question paper 1 has reduced marks and a shorter duration of 50 minutes. Question paper 2 has reduced marks and a shorter duration of 1 hour and 40 minutes. The reduced question papers have proven to be effective at assessing learners on the appropriate range of skills, knowledge and understanding from across the course. Both question papers will be marked by SQA. We will grade the course from A to D.
Applications of Mathematics	Higher	Learners will sit one exam and complete one coursework assessment: Exam Coursework: project We are keeping the following modifications to assessment: The exam has reduced marks and a shorter duration of 2 hours and 5 minutes. The reduced exam has proven to be effective at assessing learners on the appropriate range of skills, knowledge and understanding from across the course. Both assessments will be marked by SQA. Art and Design	National 3	This course contains the following units: Expressive Activity Design Activity Learners will complete unit assessments that are internally marked by the teacher or lecturer and assessed as pass or fail. The course will be assessed as pass or fail and will be quality assured by SQA. We are keeping the following modification to assessment: In the Design Activity unit, learners can use one design material instead of two. This modification still allows learners to show the appropriate skills, knowledge and understanding for the course.
Art and Design	National 4	This course contains the following units: Expressive Activity Design Activity Added value unit - Art and Design practical activity Learners will complete unit assessments that are internally marked by the teacher or lecturer and assessed as pass or fail. The course will be assessed as pass or fail and will be quality assured by SQA. We are keeping the following modifications to assessment: In the Expressive Activity unit, learners can produce two drawings instead of three. In the Design Activity unit, learners can use one design material and one technique and/or one technology, instead of two. These modifications still allow learners to show the appropriate skills, knowledge and understanding for the course. They are also consistent with our guidance on the volume of practical work for National 5 and Higher Art and Design portfolios.

Art and Design (Design)	Advanced Higher	Learners will complete one coursework assessment: Design portfolio We are keeping the following modification to this assessment: For the design portfolio, learners will be required to produce 6-12 A1 sheets (or equivalent) of practical work instead of 8-16 sheets (or equivalent). This modification still allows learners to show the appropriate skills, knowledge and understanding for the course. Our findings from the 2022 exam diet showed that reducing the volume of practical work helped learners to focus their work and refine their submissions. The portfolio will be marked by SQA. We will grade the course from A to D.
Art and Design (Expressive)	Advanced Higher	Learners will complete one coursework assessment: Expressive portfolio We are keeping the following modification to this assessment: For the expressive portfolio, learners will be required to produce 6-12 A1 sheets (or equivalent) of practical work instead of 8-16 sheets (or equivalent). In the assignment, learners have the option to complete either the ‘database design and development’ task or the ‘web design and development’ task. The ‘software development and design’ task will continue to be mandatory. The assignment has reduced marks and a shorter duration of 6 hours in total. These modifications have had a positive impact on the course, while ensuring that learners continue to be assessed on the appropriate skills, knowledge and understanding. Computing Science	Advanced Higher	Learners will sit one exam and complete one coursework assessment: Exam Project We are keeping the following modifications: We have removed ‘computer systems’ from the exam. In the exam, learners have the option to complete either the ‘database design and development’ or the ‘web design and development’ section. The ‘software design and development’ section will continue to be mandatory. The exam has reduced marks and a shorter duration of 2 hours. These modifications have had a positive impact on the course, while ensuring that learners continue to be assessed on the appropriate skills, knowledge and understanding. Both assessments will be marked by SQA. We will grade the course from A to D.

Dance	National 5	Learners will sit one exam and complete two performance assessments: Exam Practical activity Performance The exam will be marked by SQA. Both the practical activity and performance will be marked in collaboration between teachers or lecturers and a visiting assessor appointed by SQA. The course will be graded from A to D.
Dance	Higher	Learners will sit one exam and complete two performance assessments: Exam Practical activity Performance We are keeping the following modification to assessment: In the practical activity, learners have the option of doing solo or group choreography. Allowing the option of doing solo choreography has proven helpful in classes that have small numbers of learners, as it reduces the need for learners to learn and perform in several different choreographies. Learners should not perform in their own choreography for the practical activity; they must adopt the role of choreographer. The exam will be marked by SQA. Both the practical activity and performance will be marked in collaboration between teachers or lecturers and a visiting assessor appointed by SQA. The course will be graded from A to D.
Design and Manufacture	National 4	This course contains the following units: Design and Manufacture: Design Design and Manufacture: Materials and Manufacture Added value unit - Design and Manufacture assignment. Learners will complete unit assessments that are internally marked by the teacher or lecturer and assessed as pass or fail. The course will be assessed as pass or fail and will be quality assured by SQA.

Drama	National 5	Learners will sit one exam and complete one performance assessment: Exam Performance The exam will be marked by SQA. The performance will be marked in collaboration between teachers or lecturers and a visiting assessor appointed by SQA. The course will be graded from A to D.
Drama	Higher	Learners will sit one exam and complete one performance assessment: Exam Performance We are keeping the following modification to assessment: In section 3 of the exam, learners give a performance analysis of a theatrical production that they have seen live or recorded. We are removing the rule that this performance must have taken place in the last two years. Schools and colleges can choose to use a live performance, a live-streamed performance, a recorded ‘live’ theatrical performance or a historical performance. This modification has had a positive impact by allowing teachers and lecturers to use online performances and resources. The exam will be marked by SQA and the performance will be marked by a visiting assessor appointed by SQA. We will grade the course from A to D.
Drama	Advanced Higher	Learners will complete two coursework assessments and one performance: Coursework: project-dissertation Coursework: assignment Performance Both the project-dissertation and the assignment will be marked by SQA. In the exam, learners are required to apply their knowledge to current national and global economic issues. However, these issues vary each year due to changes in the economic and political landscape. Publishing the list of topics each year will enable schools, colleges and learners to focus on these specific economic issues during the course and when preparing for the exam. Both assessments will be marked by SQA. We will grade the course from A to D.
Engineering Science	National 4	This course contains the following units: Engineering Contexts and Challenges Electronics and Control Mechanisms and Structures Added value unit - Engineering Science assignment.
