How do SVQs work?
SVQs are unique as they are a work-based qualification and have no formal written exams. A learner collects and submits evidence from their day-to-day work, which is then assessed against national occupational standards to demonstrate their competence. The assessment process is flexible and is carried out in the workplace by a qualified assessor.
Who can do them?
SVQs are for a diverse range of people, from apprentices and new staff to experienced professionals who want to formalise their skills. They are ideal for anyone participating in a training scheme or studying part-time, providing a practical, vocational qualification.

The Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) recognises each SVQ.
SVQs are available at different levels of difficulty — SCQF level 4, up to SCQF level 11. This allows for progression in the workplace.
