Forest Kindergarten Award SCQF level 7

This qualification meets the needs of practitioners who would like to set up regular off-site visits to a local wood or nearby green space for children in their care.

The Award in Forest Kindergarten at SCQF level 7 recognises the value of woodlands as an integral part of the learning process for pre-school children and covers the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to develop a forest kindergarten.

The qualification has been developed in partnership with the Forestry Commission Scotland.

Why deliver this qualification

It is becoming increasingly recognised that there are many benefits of allowing children to play freely in local woodlands on a frequent and regular basis. This includes increased physical activity, greater knowledge about nature and, in the long term, a stronger likelihood that these children grow up to become adults who understand and demonstrate positive attitudes and actions towards caring for the environment.

Awards are trusted qualifications developed by practitioners with the support of schools, colleges, and sector skills councils.

The Forest Kindergarten Award is straightforward to deliver and slots readily into school and college timetables.

Who does this qualification suit

Learners are likely to be trainee nursery practitioners, who will have opportunities to learn about how to develop a forest kindergarten within practical placements.

Other learners may include qualified nursery practitioners, early years’ workers, managers, teachers, and others working within the nursery/school setting who may supervise children.

Access

Learners should be able to show that they have some knowledge and/or experience in working with children in an early years’ setting. They will also require to undertake a practical placement in a nursery or school setting.

As with all SQA qualifications, entry is at the discretion of the centre.
