NPA in Building Services Engineering at SCQF level 5

National Progression Awards (NPAs) assess a defined set of skills and knowledge in specialist vocational areas, linked to National Occupational Standards. This NPA in Building Services Engineering at SCQF level 5 introduces learners to techniques that are important in the sector. It develops knowledge and understanding of building services engineering and covers: installation operations, basic plumbing operations, energy and the environment, systems, roles, responsibilities and procedures, and health and safety. It also covers transferable skills such as problem solving, planning, organisational and communication skills. The qualification is available through schools, colleges and training providers.

The award has been designed to equip candidates with the knowledge, understanding and skills required for success in employment or further study/training within the Scottish building services engineering (BSE) sector. It is mainly aimed at those who are interested in pursuing a career in one of the BSE sector industries.

This NPA covers SCQF level 5, allowing clear progression and development routes to:

  • full-time

  • day release
  • evening provision

Who does this qualification suit

The NPA is suitable for:

  • S5 and S6 candidates
  • school leavers
  • progression candidates (eg Skills for Work)
  • adults returning to education
  • employed candidates who wish to enhance their career prospects
  • unemployed candidates who wish to enhance their job prospects

Entry is at the discretion of the centre.

Learners would benefit from having attained one or more qualifications at SCQF level 4.


The level 5 award could provide progression to:

  • Modern Apprenticeships within BSE sector trades
  • higher level education
  • employment


Centres not already approved to deliver this qualification need to come forward for approval and should contact SQA’s Business Development Team for guidance.

Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQA’s general requirements for technical/occupational competence as outlined in the Systems and Qualification Approval Guide.

How to assess

Assessment is based primarily on the assessment of practical activities and supported by knowledge testing where appropriate. Integrated assessment is encouraged.

Assessment should be carried out in a holistic way as evidence will be generated for the mandatory and optional units collectively.

The delivery of the award is at the individual centre’s discretion.
