SVQ Textile Care Services SCQF level 5

The Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) in Textile Care Services at SCQF level 5 allows candidates to demonstrate competence in job related skills in their particular area of work and expertise.

This qualification covers areas such as health, safety and security at work in the laundry, wet and dry cleaning sector. Learners will choose a specialised route in the laundry, wet or dry cleaning area of textile care.

The main purpose of this qualification is to provide the theoretical knowledge and vocational skills that are necessary to successfully fulfil a role in the textile care industry. It also reflects the changes that are occurring within the textile care sector, such as the substantial growth of wet care cleaning as an alternative to the traditional dry cleaning techniques.

This qualification has been designed in partnership with UKFT, the Sector Skills Council, to ensure relevance to the sector.

SVQs are based on National Occupational Standards. SQA works in partnership with other organisations to ensure that National Occupational Standards (NOS) are relevant to the current and future needs of Scottish industries.

This qualification is available through employers and training providers.

Why deliver this qualification

Upon successful completion, learners will gain al recognised qualification which guarantees that they have the skills, knowledge and abilities required to carry out their role successfully. Employers will also benefit from their employees being proficient.

Advancements in technology and the increase in enforcement of solvent emissions legislation plus the increased global restrictions on environmental issues to restrict the traditional methods of solvents and their use in the industrial / commercial sector is going to make the onus on dry cleaners to become more eco-friendly.

This is driving existing and new businesses to consider the wet cleaning route to add to their existing process or in some cases to replace it completely. Several leading garment manufacturers and retailers are now labelling their expensive outer wear as exclusively to be processed in the wet cleaning process. The textile care services industry can only see this trend increasing in the fashion world. This qualification reflects the industry's progression and innovation whilst including a route that allows the traditional processing skills found in dry cleaning to be covered.

As assessment is carried out in the workplace this minimises any time learners would need to be away from their work.
