Complete Childminding Learning Pathway Award SCQF level 7

The Complete Childminding Learning Pathway Award is made up of six units. All NWA units should be holistically assessed. Accordingly, some of the knowledge tasks and practical tasks will link to several of the units.

Learners will have to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding to agreed standards. They will carry out assessments in relation to the performance criteria as they progress through the learning programme, and the evidence they submit will be assessed by the assessor. They will be given regular feedback while undertaking the assessments.

They will have to demonstrate the underpinning knowledge needed to deal with any problems and variations that may occur during practical work. This will take the form of a knowledge assessment (known as Knowledge Evidence) and will also be assessed by the assessor.

Why deliver this qualification

Awards are trusted qualifications, which have been developed by practitioners with the support of schools, colleges, and the Sector Skills Councils.

The aim of the course is to enable early years practitioners to organise, safely set up, and facilitate high-quality early learning and childcare provision for children, families, and service users.

By the end of the course, participants will understand:

  • legal and work setting requirements on equality, diversity, discrimination, and rights
  • their role in promoting children and young people's rights, choices, wellbeing, and active participation
  • their duty to report any acts or omissions that could infringe the rights of children and young people
  • how to deal with and challenge discrimination
  • that key people, children, and young people have the right to make complaints with support
  • legislation, codes of practice, standards, frameworks, and guidance relevant to childminding; their childminding setting; and the content of this standard
  • how their own background, experiences, and beliefs may have an impact on their practice
  • their own roles, responsibilities, and accountabilities as a childminder with their limits and boundaries
  • the roles, responsibilities, and accountabilities of others with whom they work
  • how to access and work to procedures and agreed ways of working
  • the meaning of person-centred/child-centred working, and the importance of knowing and respecting every child and young person as an individual
  • the importance of the interests and wellbeing of children and young people
  • children and young people's cultural and language situation
  • how to build trust and rapport in a relationship
  • how power and influence as a worker can have an impact on relationships
  • how to work in ways that promote active participation and maintain children and young people's dignity, respect, personal beliefs, and preferences
  • how to work in partnership with children, young people, key people, and others
  • how to manage ethical conflicts and dilemmas in their work
  • how to challenge poor practice, care or attitudes
  • how and when to seek support in situations

Who does this qualification suit

The Complete Childminding Learning Pathway Award is designed to allow the learner to demonstrate their competent knowledge and understanding of practice as a professional childminder in early years and childcare practice. The Award is based on a registered childminding service which is underpinned by early learning and childcare legislation, frameworks and guidance.

This Award will help the learner develop their childminding practice and enable them to develop their early years and childcare provision. The learner will also learn to link theory into practice in the childminding setting.


The learner should be able to show that they have knowledge and or experience in working with children in a childminding setting. The learner should also know and understand theory and legislation in relation to early years and childcare, and the impact this has on practice. Learners will be required to become familiar with current legislation, frameworks, and guidance in relation to early years learning and childcare. Entry is at the discretion of the centre.


Learners may progress to an SVQ in Social Services (Children and Young People) at SCQF level 7, or an HNC in Childhood Practice at SCQF Level 7.


Centres with devolved authority for approval should use their own internal approval process.

Centres without devolved authority are required to put themselves forward for approval (514 KB), and they should contact SQA's Business Development Team for guidance.

Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQA's general requirements for technical/occupational competence as outlined in the Systems and Qualification Approval Guide (295 KB).

How to assess

Learners must complete knowledge assessments as specified. The knowledge activities are designed to specifically support the learning process. The suggested evidence for the activities will allow learners to demonstrate their own reflective practice relating to their own learning. These will be fully assessed and recorded for internal verification
