PDA in Engineering at SCQF level 7

Professional Development Awards (PDAs) extend or broaden professional or vocational skills. The PDA in Engineering at SCQF level 7 is designed to address the engineering skills needed for multi-skilled individuals within the engineering sector and includes the inter-personal skills required for the 21st century economy.

The PDA consists of four mandatory units including Pneumatics and Hydraulics and Thermofluids. It has been designed to be delivered as a taught course and will normally be available as a combination of workshops and self-directed study.

The PDA in Engineering at SCQF level 7 has been developed in partnership with employers and industry so it is suitable for the current sector.

It will help employers meet skills gaps and provide continuing professional development for staff, while learners will gain knowledge and skills needed for progression in the workplace.

The unit-based structure aids timetable flexibility. Units are typically 40 hours of learning and they can be delivered on a full-time or part-time basis.

This qualification is aimed at a range of people, including: school pupils in the senior phase (S5/6), college students, and individuals who are currently in employment and who wish to obtain a formal qualification.

Access

Entry is at the discretion of the centre, however it is recommended that learners should have experience of Engineering Science, or Physics, and Mathematics at National 5 as a minimum.

The PDA in Engineering at SCQF level 7 could provide the opportunity to progress to other Engineering PDAs and HN qualifications. Successful completion of the qualification could also open up more employment opportunities and career prospects in the sector.

Centres with devolved authority for approval should use their own internal approval process.

Centres without devolved authority are required to come forward for approval and should contact SQA's Business Development Team for guidance.

Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQA's general requirements for technical/occupational competence as outlined in the Systems and Qualification Approval Guide.

Each individual unit specification gives detailed information on the evidence requirements and approaches to assessment for each unit.
