NPA Travel and Tourism SCQF level 6

This National Progression Award (NPA):

  • provides a broad overview of the travel and tourism industry
  • allows learners to focus on specialist travel and tourism sectors such as tour guiding or working as air cabin crew
  • offers a wide range of optional units to enable centres to meet local needs

This qualification is available through schools, colleges and training providers.

This National Progression Award consists of one mandatory unit (6 SCQF credit points) and three optional units (18 SCQF credit points), two of which must be at SCQF level 6.

How to assess

Assessment will be a combination of practical and knowledge assessments under closed and open-book assessment conditions. See the assessment and evidence requirements for each unit.

This includes access to ICT and where appropriate software to simulate ticketing and booking.

Simulated environments for practical units such as mock aircraft cabin, check-in/boarding areas

Safety demonstration equipment including seatbelt, life jacket, oxygen mask and safety card for Cabin Crew unit

Excellent links with industry to enable appropriate work experience, visits and visiting speakers

Why study this qualification

The NPA in Travel and Tourism is designed for a wide range of learners, including:

  • school leavers
  • adults returning to education

The qualification is also suitable if you have relevant work experience.

Tourism is a major employer and revenue earner of increasing importance to the Scottish economy. The provision of qualifications in travel and tourism directly responds to the needs of the industry for a well-trained workforce who can identify and meet the needs of visitors.

You will develop specific skills related to travel and tourism but also transferable skills including customer care, marketing and skills for employment.

The NPA has a wide range of optional units that provide either a broad set of knowledge and skills suitable for the industry or you can focus on more specialist subsectors such as retail travel, cabin crew work, tour guiding or heritage tourism.

Access

Entry is at the discretion of the centre. However, if you are thinking of entering the level 6 award it is recommended that you have attained the skills, knowledge and understanding required by one or more of the following, or equivalent qualifications and/or experience:

  • English at National 5 (SCQF level 5) or above
  • Travel and Tourism Units at SCQF level 5
  • Social subject at National 5 (SCQF level 5) or above
  • Relevant work/life experience
  • Employment and progression

You could use this level 6 award to progress to:

  • NC Travel and Tourism at SCQF level 5 and/or 6
