NPA Built Environment within a Global Infrastructure SCQF level 6

This National Progression Award (NPA):
- introduces learners to project-based learning and techniques that are important in the construction sector
- provides an overview of the construction industry with a focus on the built environment within a global infrastructure
It covers areas such as sustainability, project management and communication skills.
This qualification is available through schools, colleges and training providers.
NPAs can be taught as a full-time course over one year or as a part-time course over two years.
This NPA develops:
- knowledge and understanding of the construction industry
- practical, technical and transferable skills such as critical thinking, collaboration and team working skills
- communication skills
- understanding of sustainability in the construction industry
Its design benefits centres in various ways:
- It offers a wide range of optional units to enable centres to meet local needs.
- Many of the units allow for centres to work with industry partners to contextualise and show relevance of content.
- Delivery is designed in such a way that combined study may enable learners to complete the award within a shorter period of time.
- The framework design allows for an integrated approach and flexibility to encompass further optional units.

The NPA in Built Environment within a Global Infrastructure is designed for a wide range of learners, including:
- school leavers
- adults returning to education
You will develop a broad range of knowledge and skills that are essential for success in the construction sector.
You will be introduced to the built environment within a global infrastructure through project-based learning while developing general skills, technical knowledge and understanding, and employability skills.
You will gain an understanding of the construction industry in terms of work sectors, careers and types of infrastructure and buildings. You will work with some creative ideas associated with the design process in relation to construction proposals.
You will also develop important skills in managing resources, timelines and budgets to ensure successful project completion.
Access
Entry is at the discretion of the centre. Learners would benefit from an educational background: secondary education, ideally with National 5 (or equivalent) in Mathematics, Physics, Engineering Science or Graphic Communications.
Employment and progression
You could use this SCQF level 6 award to progress to:
- study at SCQF level 7 or 8 courses
- an HNC or HND in Built Environment or Civil Engineering or a related area
- employment in the construction sector, perhaps as a site manager, a project supervisor or a computer-aided design (CAD) technician
