Becoming an SQA marker - Foster's story

Our markers perform a role which is vital to the success of the exam diet. They ensure that candidates’ answers to the exams they sit are marked to a national standard, and within a specified timeframe.

Foster is a Principal Teacher of Technical Education and STEM and has been teaching for 16 years. He says his initial nervousness around marking soon faded away thanks to the support he received, and the many benefits of getting involved.

Why did you apply to become an SQA marker?

I applied to become an SQA marker as I wanted to develop my skills and understanding around assessment, and in turn improve my teaching. I also wanted to challenge myself out with the classroom and to engage with colleagues who shared the same passion I have for the subject.

What were your perceptions of the role of an SQA marker?

My perceptions were that marking would be challenging and that it would take time to get up to speed. I also perceived that the assessment side of things wouldn't be as fun as the actual teaching! Well, I was wrong. It was challenging, but I got up to speed quickly with the help and support I received from the subject team. I was also excited about getting back into the classroom to apply what I’d learned.

How did you find the process of becoming a marker for SQA?

After completing some SQA online courses, I attended the markers meeting and began the process of marking. It proved an easy process and made me wonder why I hadn’t done it earlier!

How did you feel when you received your first exam scripts to mark?

I was nervous as I felt I was still learning but I was given lots of support and advice from the Team Leaders. As I progressed, I felt my confidence building with each script I marked. The nervousness soon begins to fade once you realise you are applying the standards fairly and consistently.

How has becoming a marker for SQA benefited you?

It has benefited me in so many different ways. I have so much more confidence in the way I teach the course and in my understanding of the ways in which it is assessed. I have been able to network with colleagues from around the country, sharing advice and resources. And most importantly I have enjoyed it and keep coming back year after year for more.

What advice would you offer to colleagues who are considering applying to become an SQA marker?

It is the best CPD you will ever do. You learn so much more about your subject than you do in the classroom. It builds your confidence, develops your skills and improves your understanding - the end result is you’re the best teacher you can be for the young people.

SQA has opportunities for markers across all subjects and levels, and full training will be provided. For further information, and to apply, you can visit our website, or contact us with queries.
