Becoming an SQA marker - Cheryll's story
Our markers perform a role which is vital to the success of the exam diet. They ensure that candidates’ answers to the exams they sit are marked to a national standard, and within a specified timeframe.
Cheryll, a Drama teacher based in Fife, has been teaching for 19 years. She says becoming a marker was more straightforward than she thought it would be, and has benefitted her teaching, while also helping her make connections with other teachers.
Why did you apply to become an SQA marker?
I applied to be a marker for the Higher paper initially as I wanted to understand how to help my students improve their grades in the subject by understanding the marking in more depth. Later, I became a VA and then also a marker for Advanced Higher Dissertation as I moved to a new school and was delivering this for the first time in a few years.
What were your perceptions of the role of an SQA marker?
I was aware, from colleagues, of the benefits of the marking process. It also made me appreciate the amount of work involved in the exam process.
Can you describe the process to becoming a marker for SQA?
Becoming a marker was a lot more straightforward than I thought it would be. Once I had been teaching the level for three years, I applied through the SQA website and shortly afterwards I was told I was successful. These days vacancies are advertised frequently through social media so it's even easier.
How did you feel when you received your first exam scripts to mark?
My first year of marking I was extremely nervous about getting it right but also excited to be a part of the marking team. I was lucky that the Higher team were so supportive and happy to answer any questions because I had lots of them!
How has becoming a marker for SQA benefited you?
Being an SQA marker has benefited my teaching practice as I know the areas that candidates often find challenging. I have found ways of teaching these areas to help my own students, and due to my time as a marker, I feel confident in my delivery of our qualifications. It has also helped me make connections with like-minded people in my subject.
What advice would you offer to colleagues who are considering applying to become an SQA marker?
I would advise anyone interested in becoming a marker to do it! It is 100% the best CPD and I think everyone should do some SQA marking in their career. Being a marker is a great way to meet other teachers, share resources and make connections with people in your subject.
