NPA Anthropology SCQF level 5
This National Progression Award (NPA):
- introduces learners to Anthropology
- develops an understanding of one’s place in the world
- develops an understanding of the influence of cultural background on views of the world
- develops an understanding of different peoples derived from social anthropological studies
- enables learners to develop the ability to work effectively in the international world to which they belong and foster a sense of global citizenship
It develops subject specific skills as well as a range of generic skills, for example, core skills, meta skills, literacies, academic and research skills. It is a unique course that is only available at this SCQF level via Qualifications Scotland.
It covers areas such as social anthropology and forensic anthropology.
This qualification is available through schools, colleges and training providers.
NPAs can be taught as a full-time course over one year or as a part-time course over two years.

How to assess
All assessments take place in open-book conditions. Diverse assessment is encouraged. Evidence can be provided in any suitable format. Some practical work is required in the Forensic Anthropology unit. See the assessment and evidence requirements for each unit.

Why study this qualification
The NPA in Anthropology is designed for a wide range of learners:
- college students, including adult returners
- senior phase pupils in school
- learners in the community with an interest in anthropology
The qualification is also suitable if you would like to find out about anthropology.
You will develop subject specific knowledge and skills and intercultural skills. You will gain an insight into different cultures, people’s traditions, ways of thinking and behaving.
You will also develop a range of generic skills, for example, core skills, meta skills, literacies, academic and research skills.
Access
Entry is at the discretion of the school, college or training provider.
Learners do not need prior knowledge and experience of anthropology.
However, it would be helpful to have good communication skills, for example:
- F3GB 10 Communication or C725 74 National 4 English
- some prior study or experience of social subjects or social sciences at SCQF level 4
Employment and progression
You could use this SCQF level 5 award to progress to:
- units in Social Anthropology at SCQF level 6
- freestanding units or courses in social subjects and social sciences at SCQF levels 5 and 6
- National Certificates in Social Sciences at SCQF levels 5 and 6
