NC Sport and Physical Activity SCQF level 5
This National Certificate (NC) is designed to meet the needs of learners who wish to develop knowledge and skills in sport and physical activity. It allows progression in a variety of areas such as sport coaching, physical activity and health or similar.
The group award allows flexibility for the centre to choose their own pathways that meet the needs of their learners. The optional set allows for the centre to choose relevant pathways which involve areas such as sports development, sports science and sports performance.
This qualification, which consists of the group award, with the addition of National Progressional Awards (NPAs), is designed to provide learners with opportunities to develop session planning skills, working with others, and plan fitness sessions for themselves and others.
Learners will gain a range of knowledge and skills for the sport and physical activity sector, as well as employability skills and industry relevant knowledge to help gain employment or to progress into another course at SCQF level 6.
Professional recognition
The NC in Sport and Physical Activity at SCQF level 5 provides the opportunity to gain membership with Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) and joint certification from Sport Scotland, Scotland’s national agency for sport. CIMSPA is the professional development body for the UK’s sport and physical activity sector, offering Scottish colleges support with student and practitioner membership alongside partnership opportunities. CIMSPA has identified the standards for professional excellence and best practice in the sport and physical activity sector. Members and partners are recognised for upholding and delivering these standards.
Qualifications Scotland, Sport Scotland and CIMSPA have been working closely to support the development of the sport and physical activity sector through embedding CIMSPA Professional Standards into Qualification Scotland’s qualification frameworks. CIMSPA supports Qualification Scotland with wider delivery across Scottish institutions, which has supported the development of a CIMSPA partnership and membership offer specifically for Scottish colleges.
The NPA in Sports Coaching at level 5 is jointly certificated with SportScotland and CIMSPA. Learners can be professionally recognised by CIMSPA as Coaching Assistant Practitioners upon completion of the NPA.

How to assess
The Sport and Physical Activity Group Award places emphasis on assessing the whole outcome or a combination of outcomes within each of the units rather than on individual knowledge and skills. This reduces the assessment load for both learners and centres.
The unit specifications contain guidance on types of assessment and optional oral/written evidence that can be used, including professional discussion, performance observation and a portfolio or e-portfolio.
Centres are encouraged to use holistic or cross assessment, where possible, and this should be clearly evidenced within a mapping document for internal and external verification purposes.
Assessment support packs may be available for selected units. These can be found on Qualification Scotland’s secure website.
