HNC/HND Make-up Artistry: TV, Film and Theatre

Higher National Qualifications provide practical skills and theoretical knowledge that meet the needs of employers. The HNC/D in Make-up Artistry: TV, Film and Theatre (SCQF level 7/8) develops knowledge and skills in all aspects of make-up artistry and should enable learners to work confidently and competently within this industry.

These qualifications covers areas such as: period and 20th century hairstyling and make-up; ageing skills; character skills; specialised make-up effects; life casting and mould making; and sculpting and flat mould production for prosthetic make-up.

These qualifications are available through colleges and training providers. Typically, an HNC takes one year to complete and an HND takes two years.

Higher National Qualifications have been developed by SQA in partnership with colleges, universities and industry ¿ therefore, employers recognise that they provide sound evidence of ability.

The unit-based structure supports flexibility. A unit is typically 40 hours of timetabled learning.

The HNC/D in Make-up Artistry: TV, Film and Theatre awards are suitable for a wide range of candidates including:

  • school leavers
  • adult returners to education
  • individuals in employment who wish to enhance their career prospects
  • people who wish to start their own business

Access

As with all SQA qualifications, entry is at the discretion of the centre.

The HNC in Make-up Artistry: TV, Film and Theatre entry requirements are:

  • National Certificate in Make-up Artistry at SCQF level 6
  • an SVQ 3 at SCQF level 6 in appropriate subjects
  • direct entrants with occupationally relevant skills and experience

The HND in Make-up Artistry: TV, Film and Theatre entry requirements are:

  • HNC Make-up Artistry: TV, Film and Theatre

Different combinations of relevant National Qualifications, vocational qualifications and equivalent qualifications from other awarding bodies may also be acceptable.

Progression and employment

The HNC/D in Make-up Artistry: TV, Film and Theatre qualifications are designed as a progression route for learners who have achieved the National Course in Make-up Artistry at SCQF level 6, and is suitable for direct entrants with relevant entry qualifications and/or experience, as well as adult returners with occupationally relevant skills and experience. Learners who successfully complete the qualification may progress to employment within the TV, film or theatre industries or progress to further study in higher education.

The mode of delivery for the HNC/D in Make-up Artistry: TV, Film and Theatre can be either full-time or part-time at the discretion of the delivering centre.

Centres without devolved authority are required to come forward for approval and should contact SQA's Business Development Team for guidance.

Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQA's general requirements for technical/occupational competence as outlined in the Systems and Qualification Approval Guide (510 KB).
