HNC Furniture.The HNC Furniture will allow you the opportunity to develop contemporary vocational skills for the furniture industry. You will do project work that involves planning, and integrating and applying a variety of skills within a set timescale. You will be able to specialise in different aspects of the furniture industry — Design, Craft or Restoration.

You will also develop your skills in organising, communicating, information collection or research, logical and analytical thinking, decision making, problem solving, co-operating with others (teamwork), producing and working from diagrams and drawings, and calculating materials required and costs.

Employment and progression opportunities

There are employment opportunities in a range of jobs, such as upholsterer, furniture restorer, cabinet maker, or furniture designer. Employment in this industry is generally in small organisations.

There is a history of people progressing from this HNC into the 2nd and 3rd year of degree courses. These arrangements have been built up by centres and candidates individually. Entry qualifications and articulation requirements for degree courses vary significantly, and you should check with your centre and any university you are interested in before you choose your optional Units.


As with all SQA qualifications, entry is at the discretion of the centre. Examples of formal entry qualifications include:

  • A National Qualification in Furniture or equivalent qualification at SCQF level 5 or 6.
  • SVQ/NVQ 3 or equivalent in Furniture or a related area.
  • Two Highers at C or above and four Standard Grades at 2 or above.
  • If English is not your first language, English for Speakers of Other Languages at an appropriate level.

You may be accepted for entry if you have suitable work experience in the furniture or related industry.

If you have equivalent qualifications from other countries, you may be accepted for entry providing the competences can be identified and are appropriate.
