Sociology
Sociology offers opportunities for learners to investigate human society, cultures and social issues. The courses encourage learners to ask questions about the social world we live in. They also encourage evidence-based explanations for human social behaviour.

Centres need to apply for approval before delivering the qualification for the first time, and must consider the resources that are available to them to do this.
In order to deliver this qualification in the next academic session, and in order for candidates to be certificated in August the following year, centres must apply for approval by the end of September of the previous year (for example, the deadline for applications for approval must be submitted by September 2020 in order to deliver and certificate the qualification by August 2021).
Subject specific requirements
Centres must demonstrate that teachers and lecturers delivering/assessing Sociology have completed at least two years successful study of Sociology at University or Higher National Diploma (HND) level (minimum SCQF level 8), including the study of research methods.

We’re running an Understanding Standards event for National 5 and Higher Sociology on Monday 17 November 2025 from 9.30 am to 4pm.
It will take place at our Glasgow office, with an option to join online for those unable to travel.
What the event will cover
This event will focus on the National 5 and Higher Sociology question papers. You’ll take part in workshop activities where you’ll review and discuss examples of assessment evidence.
