The SVQs in Leather Manufacture at SCQF level 7 and Manufacturing Textile Products at Level 7 have been merged to form the new qualification:

Designed in partnership with UKFT, this SVQ (Scottish Vocational Qualification) in Leather Manufacture at SCQF level 7 allows learners to demonstrate competence in job-related skills in their particular area of work and expertise.

Topics covered include: mechanical processing, computer-aided design and manufacturing, production processes, providing customer service, and leadership.

This SVQ is available through employers, further education and training providers. It can only be offered in partnership with industry.

Why deliver this qualification

SVQs are based on National Occupational Standards. This SVQ 3 is jointly awarded with Creative Skillset, the industry skills body for the creative industries, ensuring relevance to the sector.

Learners will gain an internationally-recognised qualification which guarantees that they have the skills, knowledge and abilities required to carry out their role successfully. 

Employers will benefit from more proficient employees.

Assessment is carried out in the workplace so minimising the time learners need to be away from their work.

The achievement of other qualifications such as the SVQ 2 in Leather Production can contribute towards the successful completion of this award.

Who does this qualification suit

This SVQ 3 is suitable for individuals who are currently in employment in the leather manufacturing industry and who wish to obtain a formal qualification.

Access

Entry is at the discretion of the centre, however successful completion of SVQ 2 Leather Production is recommended.

Candidates should be in a job where they are carrying out relevant tasks and responsibilities which allow then to gather the required evidence.

Progression

This SVQ 3 award could provide progression to:

  • further employment in the leather industry in a managerial/supervisory role
  • degree-level study at a higher education institution

Approval

Centres with devolved authority for approval should use their own internal approval process.

Centres without devolved authority will have to come forward for approval and should contact SQA's Business Development Team for guidance.

Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQA's general requirements for technical/occupational competence as outlined in the Guide to Approval

Core Skills signposting

Core Skill mappings are carried out by the SSC responsible for the development of an SVQ. It is a requirement of SQA Accreditation that every SVQ submission includes information on where possible opportunities for candidates to develop Core Skills exist across the mandatory units.

Centres should note that mappings are not audited or validated against the Core Skills framework/units so are not accepted by SQA awarding body as evidence towards achievement of the Core Skills units.
