SQA Advanced Certificate in Professional Cookery

The SQA Advanced Certificate in Professional Cookery (SCQF level 7) will develop knowledge and skills in areas such as specialist culinary skills and food hygiene and control systems. Learners can specialise in either production cookery or patisserie, gaining valuable leadership skills and an understanding of the role of the supervisor.

This qualification is available through a growing number of colleges and universities around the world.

The unit-based structure supports flexible delivery. A unit is typically 40 hours of timetabled learning.

The SQA Advanced Certificate in Professional Cookery meets the employment needs of a broad range of hospitality businesses.

The qualification includes a choice of optional units allowing candidates to specialise in either production cookery or patisserie. The units provide candidates with the knowledge and skills to enable them to develop practical and supervisory skills.

The SQA Advanced Certificate will develop planning, analysis, study and research skills, and critical and evaluative thinking.

Access

As with all SQA qualifications, entry is at the discretion of the centre. Examples of formal entry qualifications include:

  • appropriate groupings of National Units
  • any two National Qualifications at Higher together with three passes at National 5
  • an SVQ 2 or 3 in a relevant area
  • relevant work experience

Different combinations of relevant National Qualifications, vocational qualifications and equivalent qualifications from other awarding bodies may also be acceptable.

Progression

Candidates who achieve an SQA Advanced Certificate in Professional Cookery can progress to the SQA Advanced Diploma in Professional Cookery.

The SQA Advanced Certificate and Diploma in Professional Cookery can provide advanced entry to degree-level study. For further information please refer to the SQA university agreements.

Offer this qualification

Centres with devolved authority for approval should use their own internal approval process.

Centres without devolved authority require to come forward for approval and should contact SQA’s Business Development Team for guidance.

Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQA’s general requirements for technical/occupational competence as outlined in the Systems and Qualification Approval Guide.

Ongoing course assessment will apply. Each unit specification gives detailed information on the evidence requirements and approaches to assessment for the unit.
