The qualification covers the application of insulation to various surfaces while working safely and efficiently in the workplace, including erecting and dismantling access equipment.

This qualification may be available through employers, training providers and colleges in England.

This is an updated qualification that has been developed in partnership with the Thermal Insulation Contractors Association (TICA) to ensure it meets the needs of the industry.

Rationale and purpose of this qualification

This qualification is aimed at those who have no prior experience of the thermal insulation industry.

Its primary purpose is to develop the learner’s occupational competence as a thermal insulator so that they can gain employment, progress in the industry or work towards another qualification (see Progression).

This qualification delivers the underpinning knowledge needed to meet the nationally recognised standard for the role and so provides a sound basis for working in the industry.

Objectives

The qualification is designed to meet the following objectives:

  • preparing learners for employment  
  • preparing learners to progress to another qualification
  • meeting relevant programmes of learning
  • giving learners personal growth and engagement in learning
  • preparing learners to progress to the next level of English or Mathematics

Recognition

This qualification is supported by the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS).

The Construction Skills Certification Scheme provides a registration card scheme acknowledged by industry for those involved in construction. The scheme recognises skills, knowledge and understanding, competence and qualifications.

What does this qualification cover?

As this is a knowledge-based qualification, learners will be acquiring the knowledge and skills required through either on-the-job experience or in a learning environment.

To achieve the whole qualification, learners need a minimum of 113 credits. They must complete all mandatory units from the qualification structure .

Who is this qualification for?

This qualification is suitable for:

  • learners with no prior experience
  • learners in employment who wish to enhance their career prospects
  • learners not in employment who wish to enhance their career prospects
  • apprentices
  • school leavers
  • adults returning to education
  • full-time and part-time study

Entry

There are no specific skills, knowledge understanding or any other qualifications that must be achieved in order to start this qualification, however learners must have the potential and opportunity to gain this qualification successfully. This qualification is mainly taken by individuals who are employed or seeking employment as thermal insulation fitters.

Progression 

Learners may progress from the Level 2 in Thermal Insulation to a range of qualifications at Level 2 and above, including the NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Thermal Insulation.

The qualification can lead to employment within the thermal insulation industry.

This qualification is assessed by completing various tasks to evidence what has been learned. This can be carried out through practical assessment, knowledge-based questioning, or online assessment. The assessor can then confirm that the learner has met the requirements of the qualification and that they have the necessary underpinning knowledge and skills to progress.

The assessment process will ensure that the learner can complete the tasks that they have been directed to undertake and that they can interpret the instructions correctly. They will demonstrate that they can select the appropriate resources for the tasks and can complete them within the given timescales and specifications.
