National Progression Awards in Digital Media

National Progression Awards in Digital Media

National Progression Awards (NPAs) assess a defined set of skills and knowledge in specialist vocational areas, linked to National Occupational Standards.

The NPAs in Digital Media at SCQF levels 4 and 5 introduce learners to techniques that are important in the digital media sector such as audio, still images and moving images. In addition to developing knowledge and understanding of digital media, learners will develop practical, technical and transferable skills — including oral, written and evaluation abilities.

These NPAs are a revision of the NPA Digital Media Basics at SCQF level 4 and the NPA Digital Media Editing at SCQF level 5.

These qualifications are available through schools and colleges.

Why deliver this qualification

The NPAs in Digital Media at SCQF level 4 and SCQF level 5 offer current, fit for purpose, bite-sized chunks of learning that are straightforward for centres to adopt and for learners to study. New skills can be gained quickly and cost effectively.

These awards offer learners a foundation in each of three main areas of digital media: audio, still images and moving images. They also introduce a range of tools to acquire and edit digital media.

The awards consist of three mandatory units. There is no requirement for optional units because of the broad-based nature of the mandatory units which span the full skillset encompassed by digital media.

The awards (three National Units) fit well into school and college timetables. They can be placed into a hierarchy, which permits learners to mix and match units and still gain a group award (at the level of the lowest unit). For example, if a learner undertakes the level 5 award but can only pass the Digital Media: Audio Unit at level 4, then they would gain the group award at level 4.

These NPAs cover SCQF levels 4 and 5, allowing clear progression and development routes to:

  • higher education
  • qualifications in related fields

These NPAs provide opportunities to develop:

  • Core Skills
  • transferable skills
  • employability skills

These NPAs can be offered in the following modes:

  • full-time (eg as a fast-track into full a NC or HN programme)
  • part-time (eg day-release)
  • open and distance learning
  • infill into existing classes
  • evening provision

Who does this qualification suit

The NPAs in Digital Media at SCQF levels 4 and 5 are suitable for:

  • learners wishing to develop and enhance their digital media skills to support their learning across a wide range of curricular areas
  • senior school pupils who will undertake one of the qualifications as a broadening of the Computing Science curriculum
  • students at colleges who will be using the NPAs within full or part-time college programmes
  • adults returning to education with an interest in developing digital media skills in order to access a career in this field

These qualifications are also suitable for broadening the curriculum in the senior phase of school by providing all pupils, not just those with a vocational interest in computer science, with the experience of a contemporary technological subject and the opportunity to gain skills that can be used in future employment.

Access

Entry is at the discretion of the centre. However, learners would benefit from having attained the skills, knowledge and understanding required by one or more of the following (or equivalent qualifications and/or experience):

  • any one of the component units, done on a free-standing basis
  • National 2 Information and Communications Technology
  • National 3/4/5 Computing Science

Progression

The level 4 award could provide progression to:

  • NC Computing with Digital Media SCQF level 4/5
  • NPA in Computer Networks and Systems SCQF level 5
  • NPA in Software Development SCQF level 4
  • NPA in Digital Media Animation SCQF level 5
  • NPA in Computers and Digital Photography SCQF level 5
  • NPA in Cyber Security SCQF level 5
  • NPA PC Passport SCQF level 4/5
  • NPA Web Design SCQF level 5
  • National 5 Computing Science

The level 5 award could provide progression to:

  • NPA Digital Media Production SCQF level 6
  • NC Computing with Digital Media SCQF level 5/6
  • NPA in Computer Networks and Systems SCQF level 5
  • NPA in Software Development SCQF level 4
  • NPA in Digital Media Animation SCQF level 5
  • NPA in Computers and Digital Photography SCQF level 5
  • NPA in Cyber Security SCQF level 5/6
  • NPA PC Passport SCQF level 4/5/6
  • NPA Web Design SCQF level 5
  • National 5 Computing Science

The above is not an exhaustive list. There are many other appropriate full-time and part-time courses at SCQF levels 5 and above in a wide range of subject areas.

Approval

Centres with devolved authority for approval should use their own internal approval process.

Centres without devolved authority require to come forward for approval and should contact SQA’s Business Development Team for guidance.

Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQA’s general requirements for technical/occupational competence as outlined in the Systems and Qualification Approval Guide.

How to assess

Assessment of this award will be a combination of practical and knowledge assessments under closed-book and open-book assessment conditions. Centres should refer to the assessment and evidence requirements for each unit.

Assessment support packs will be available for these qualifications. The ASPs use an integrated approach to facilitate holistic assessment.

The delivery of these awards is at the individual centre’s discretion.
