SVQ 2 and SVQ 3 Land-based Engineering (Ground Care) at SCQF levels 5 and 6

Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs) allow learners to demonstrate competence in job-related skills in their particular area of work and expertise.
The SVQ 2 Land-based Engineering (Ground Care) at SCQF level 5 covers core land-based engineering topics such as: mechanical principles; tools and equipment; material preparation, shaping and assembly; servicing and maintenance; thermal joining processes; cooling and lubrication; and servicing and repair of electrical systems on land-based equipment. It also covers monitoring and maintaining health, safety and security; and establishing and maintaining working relationships with others.
The SVQ 3 Land-based Engineering (Ground Care) at SCQF level 6 covers how to manage and improve own performance in a business environment; how to recognise and reduce hazards in the land-based engineering work area; and customer care in land-based engineering. It also includes core land-based engineering topics such as: servicing and repair of engines on land-based equipment; servicing and repair of hydraulic systems and components on land-based equipment; and inspection and testing of land-based equipment.
These qualifications have been developed by Lantra the sector skills council and are intended for people working on the service and repair of agricultural machinery.
These qualifications are available through colleges, employers and training providers.
The SVQs in Land-based Engineering (Ground Care) are now in their lapsing period. The SVQ at SCQF level 5 will finish on 31/07/2021 and the SVQ at SCQF level 6 will finish on 31/07/2023. Please refer to the qualification structure section for further information.

Why deliver this qualification
SVQs are based on National Occupational Standards. SQA works in partnership with other organisations to ensure that National Occupational Standards (NOS) are relevant to the current and future needs of Scottish industries.
The SVQs in Land-based Engineering (Ground Care) at SCQF levels 5 and 6 are re-accredited qualifications.
Successful learners gain an internationally recognised qualification which guarantees that they have the skills, knowledge and abilities required to carry out their role successfully. Employers will also benefit from their employees being proficient.
Assessment is carried out in the workplace, which minimises any time learners would need to be away from their work.
The SVQ can be offered in any of the following modes:
- full-time
- part-time (eg day-release)
- open and distance learning
Who does this qualification suit
These SVQs are suitable for:
- individuals who are currently in employment and who wish to obtain a formal qualification
- employees who wish to obtain short, continuing professional development courses
Access
Entry is at the discretion of the centre.
Candidates should be in a job or placement where they are carrying out relevant tasks and responsibilities which allow then to gather the required evidence.
Progression
Candidates who successfully complete the SVQ 2 Land-based Engineering (Ground Care) at SCQF level 5 can progress to the SVQ 3 Land-based Engineering (Ground Care) SCQF level 6.
These SVQs could also provide progression to:
- an HNC/HND in a related area
- degree-level study at a higher education institution
Approval
Centres with devolved authority for approval should use their own internal approval process.
Centres without devolved authority will have to come forward for approval and should contact SQA’s Business Development Team for guidance.
Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQA’s general requirements for technical/occupational competence as outlined in the Guide to Approval

Qualification Structure
This qualification is now in its lapsing period and will finish on 31/07/2021 (SCQF level 5) and 31/07/2023 (SCQF level 6). Centres should note:
- The qualification will be deleted from the relevant catalogue
- The qualification’s content and delivery tools will remain on SQA’s website until 31/07/2021 (SCQF level 5) and 31/07/2023 (SCQF level 6) at which point they will be removed and archived
- No new centres may be approved to offer the qualification
- No candidates can be entered for the qualification
Centres should ensure candidates complete the qualification and results are submitted to SQA before 31/07/2021 (SCQF level 5) and 31/07/2023 (SCQF level 6)

Core Skills signposting
Core Skill mappings are carried out by the SSC responsible for the development of an SVQ. It is a requirement of SQA Accreditation that every SVQ submission includes information on where possible opportunities for candidates to develop Core Skills exist across the mandatory units.
Centres should note that mappings are not audited or validated against the Core Skills framework/units so are not accepted by SQA awarding body as evidence towards achievement of the Core Skills units.
