SVQ Scientific, Technical and Formulation Processing SCQF level 5 and 6
The Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs) in Scientific, Technical and Formulation Processing at SCQF levels 5 and 6 allow candidates to demonstrate competence in job-related skills in their particular area of work and expertise.
SVQ at SCQF level 5
Three mandatory units cover team working, health and safety, and problem solving techniques. Candidates must also complete six optional units from three groups: Process, Engineering and Lab.
SVQ at SCQF level 6
Three mandatory units cover assessment of risks in the workplace in processing industries operations, effective and efficient working relationships, and problem solving activities. Candidates must also complete six optional units from two groups: Process and Engineering.
The qualifications have been designed in partnership with the sector skills council Enginuity to ensure relevance to the sector.
SVQs are based on National Occupational Standards. SQA works in partnership with other organisations to ensure that National Occupational Standards (NOS) are relevant to the current and future needs of Scottish industries.
These qualifications are available through colleges, employers and training providers.

Why deliver this qualification
Learners will gain an internationally recognised qualification which guarantees that they have the skills, knowledge and abilities required to carry out their role successfully. Employers will also benefit from their employees being proficient.
Since assessment is carried out in the workplace this minimises any time learners would need to be away from their work.
As well as providing a formal learning pathway for candidates, these SVQs support career progression particularly within small- to medium-sized employers ¿ and they align with industry needs for multi-skilled personnel.
The SVQs in Scientific, Technical and Formulation Processing can be offered in any of the following modes:
- full-time
- part-time (eg day-release)
Who does this qualification suit
These SVQs are suitable for:
- learners who may have just left school
- individuals who are currently in employment and who wish to obtain a formal qualification
- employees who wish to obtain short, continuing professional development courses
Access
Entry is at the discretion of the centre.
Candidates should be in a job or placement where they are carrying out relevant tasks and responsibilities which allow then to gather the required evidence.
No prior qualifications or knowledge are required to undertake these qualifications.
Progression
The SVQ in Scientific, Technical and Formulation Processing at SCQF level 5 could provide the opportunity to progress to the SCQF level 6 qualification. There may also be opportunities to progress to other relevant qualifications at various SCQF levels.
Successful completion of the qualification could also open up more employment opportunities and career prospects in the sector.
Approval
Centres with devolved authority for approval should use their own internal approval process.
Centres without devolved authority require to come forward for approval and should contact SQA's Business Development Team for guidance.
Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQA's general requirements for technical/occupational competence as outlined in the Systems and Qualification Approval Guide.

Qualification Structure
The SVQ in Scientific, Technical and Formulation Processing at SCQF level 5 consists of three mandatory units and six optional units. Candidates must complete at least one unit from optional groups A, B and C.
The SVQ in Scientific, Technical and Formulation Processing at SCQF level 6 consists of three mandatory units and six optional units. Candidates must complete at least one unit from optional group A and a minimum of two units from optional group B.

Core Skills signposting
Core Skill mappings are carried out by the SSC responsible for the development of an SVQ. It is a requirement of SQA Accreditation that every SVQ submission includes information on where possible opportunities for candidates to develop Core Skills exist across the mandatory units.
Centres should note that mappings are not audited or validated against the Core Skills framework/units so are not accepted by SQA awarding body as evidence towards achievement of the Core Skills units.

The SVQs at SCQF level 5 and 6 are mandatory components in the Scientific, Technical and Formulation Processing Modern Apprenticeship Framework. SQA also offer the following Core Skills components and the NC, NPA, HNC and PDA enhancements included in the Apprenticeship framework:
