Certificate Maritime Studies: Able Seafarer (Deck) SCQF level 5
The Certificate in Maritime Studies: Able Seafarer (Deck) at SCQF level 5 provides learners with a qualification that will demonstrate their aptitude in this area. This certificate will develop the learner's confidence and awareness of the skills that they have acquired which they can use for employment and/or further study.
It includes an overview of the maritime sector, vessel rope work, anchoring and mooring operations, securing a vessel for passage, vessel construction and stability, and controlling the operation of survival craft and rescue boats.
This qualification is available through SQA-approved centres such as colleges, employers and training providers.
This qualification replaces the previous Certificate in Maritime Studies: Able Seafarer/Tug Rating (Deck) GE87 45.

Why deliver this qualification
This qualification enables the learner to demonstrate both underpinning knowledge and performance evidence of competence in a maritime vocational area.
This qualification is based on the most recent version of the National Occupational Standards, defined by the Maritime Skills Alliance sector skills council.
The certificate can be offered within a workplace environment.
The evidence demonstrating achievement of the qualification can be assessed within a workplace environment or, where simulation is used, within a realistic working environment.
Who does this qualification suit
This certificate is suitable for:
- learners who may have just left school
- individuals who are currently in employment and who wish to obtain a formal qualification
Entry is at the discretion of the centre.
Progression
The level 5 certificate, particularly when combined with practical experience at sea, could provide progression to:
- employment as an able seafarer in the shipping sector.
- opportunities to progress to higher roles in the sector, such as bosun, including further training to become an officer
Approval
Centres with devolved authority for approval should use their own internal approval process.
Centres without devolved authority require to come forward for approval and should contact SQA's Business Development Team for guidance.
Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQA's general requirements for technical/occupational competence as outlined in the Systems and Qualification Approval Guide.
How to assess
Assessment of this certificate will be through a series of theoretical and practical assessments or tasks. Some assessments will be carried out under supervised open-book conditions, others under supervised closed-book conditions.
