This qualification covers areas including building and civil engineering, conservation, demolition, highways and maintenance and residential development.

Rationale and purpose of this qualification

Rationale

The qualification is designed to train people to a Construction Site Senior Management Role e.g. as a Construction Site Manager. This qualification is aimed at those in work and are looking for recognition of their prior learning and experience in their chosen industry.

Learners can then build on the skills and knowledge gained from achievement of this qualification when working towards achieving another qualification or gaining employment.

The Diploma will provide a sound basis for working/advancing in the subject area for a range of potential learners.

Purpose of this qualification:

The primary purpose of this qualification is to confirm the learners occupational competence as a Construction Site Manager.  As a competency-based qualification it will provide, on completion, the underpinning knowledge and confirmation to employers and industry managers and card schemes that learners have the skills and knowledge needed to carry out the role of a Construction Site Manager.

The qualification is assessed by completing a portfolio of evidence which details what learners have completed at work through a variety of evidence such as observation, professional discussion, witness testimony and supporting documentary evidence.  The assessor can work alongside the learner to confirm that they have met the requirements of the qualification and that they are therefore competent in their role.

Competence is displayed through the assessor observing the learner demonstrate that they carry out their normal work activities competently and to the industry standard and comply with currently legislation and company procedures.  The assessment process will ensure that the learner can complete the tasks that they have been directed to undertake and that they can interpret the instructions correctly.  The will demonstrate that they can select the appropriate resources for the task and manage a construction site to the nationally recognised standard.  They will also demonstrate that they can complete tasks within the given timescales and specifications.

What does this qualification cover?

As this is a competence based qualification, learners will be acquiring the knowledge and skills required through on-the-job experience.

This qualification has a range of pathways and is linked to typical job roles that learners will encounter within the industry.

To achieve the whole qualification learners need a minimum of 172 credits.  You must complete mandatory units plus options units from the following structures:

The Diploma in Construction Site Management (Construction) – Building and Civil Engineering consists of 19 mandatory Units

The Diploma in Construction Site Management (Construction) – Conservation consists of 17 mandatory Units and 2 Optional Units

The Diploma in Construction Site Management (Construction) – Demolition consists of 14 mandatory Units and 4 optional Units

The Diploma in Construction Site Management (Construction) – Highways and Maintenance Repair consists of 16 mandatory Units and 2 optional Units

The Diploma in Construction Site Management (Construction) – Residential Development consists of 19 mandatory Units and 1 optional Unit

Who is this qualification for?

This qualification is suitable for:

Entry to the qualification is at the discretion of the centre.

This qualification is mainly taken by individuals who are employed in the construction industry

Apprenticeships

This qualification is a mandatory component in the Higher Apprenticeship in Construction Management Levels 4, 5, and 6.

Progression

Learners may progress from the Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Construction Site Management to further qualifications at degree level in a related discipline.

The qualification may lead to employment within the construction industry in a construction senior management role (e.g. as a Construction Site Manager) or further education. 

What approvals are needed?

Centres must come forward for approval and should contact SQA’s Business Development Team for guidance.

Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQA’s general requirements for technical/occupational competence as outlined in the Systems and Qualification Approval Guide.
