Scottish qualifications

A helpful overview of the different types of qualifications making up the Scottish qualifications system and the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF).

Higher National Qualifications (HNs)

HN qualifications provide employees with both the practical skills needed to do a job and the theoretical knowledge an employer will expect them to have.

Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs)

SVQs are work-based qualifications suitable for a wide range of learners. A person who gains an SVQ has proven that they can do their job well, to national standards that have been agreed by the industry or commercial sector they are in.

Awards

SQA Awards are nationally recognised and are suitable for a wide range of people at different stages. They provide learners with opportunities to acquire skills, recognise achievement and promote confidence through independent thinking and positive attitudes, while motivating learners to be successful and participate positively in the wider community.

SQA Qualifications in the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF)

The SCQF is a way of comparing Scottish qualifications to other qualification frameworks. It does this by giving each qualification a level and a number of credit points. The level of a qualification shows how difficult the learning is. The credit points show how much learning is involved in achieving that qualification. It covers achievements from school, college, university, and many work-based qualifications.
