SVQ level 2 Hairdressing at SCQF level 5

The Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ 2) in Hairdressing at SCQF level 5 allows learners to demonstrate competence in job-related skills in their particular area of work and expertise as a junior stylist.
This SVQ covers areas such as styling and finishing hair, setting and dressing hair, cutting hair using basic techniques, and colouring and lighten hair. It also covers advising and consulting with clients, shampooing and conditioning, treating the hair and scalp, and developing and maintaining your effectiveness at work.
This qualification has been designed in partnership with Skillsactive/HABIA the sector skills council to ensure relevance to the sector.
SVQs are based on National Occupational Standards. SQA works in partnership with other organisations to ensure that National Occupational Standards (NOS) are relevant to the current and future needs of Scottish industries.
This qualification is available through colleges, employers and training providers.

Why deliver this qualification
Learners will gain an internationally recognised qualification which guarantees that they have the skills, knowledge and abilities required to carry out their role successfully. Employers will also benefit from their employees being proficient.
The SVQ is offered in the workplace. Since assessment is carried out in the workplace this minimises any time learners would need to be away from their work.
Learners can progress to a range of qualifications including SVQ 3 Hairdressing at SCQF level 6 or SVQ 3 Barbering at SCQF level 6.
Who does this qualification suit
This SVQ is suitable for:
- individuals who are currently in employment as a junior stylist and who wish to obtain a formal qualification
- employees who wish to obtain short, continuing professional development courses
Access
Entry is at the discretion of the centre.
Learners should be in a job or placement where they are carrying out relevant tasks and responsibilities which allow then to gather the required evidence.
No prior qualifications or knowledge are required to undertake this qualification.
Progression
The SCQF level 5 award could provide progression to:
- an HNC in Hairdressing
- an SVQ in Hairdressing at SCQF level 6
- an SVQ in Barbering at SCQF level 6
Approval
This qualification is non-devolvable.
Centres will have to come forward for approval and should contact SQA’s Business Development Team for guidance.

This qualification is now in its lapsing period and will finish on (31/7/2017).
Centres should note:
- The qualification will be deleted from the relevant catalogue
- The qualification’s content and delivery tools will remain on SQA’s website until 31/7/2017 at which point they will be removed and archived
- No new centres may be approved to offer the qualification
- No new candidates can be entered for the qualification
- Centres should ensure candidates complete the qualification and results are submitted to SQA before (31/7/2017)
