Construction Site Supervision (Construction): Building and Civil Engineering

The Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) level 3 in Construction Site Supervision (Construction): Building and Civil Engineering has been designed in partnership with CITB Sector Skills Council to ensure relevance to the sector. It is also jointly awarded with the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) and the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).
This qualification covers areas such as maintaining systems for health, safety, welfare and environmental protection, planning work activities and resources to meet work requirements, controlling work progress against agreed programmes, maintaining supplies of materials to meet project requirements, implementing communication systems for the project and co-ordinating preparation for site operations.
The SVQ allows learners to demonstrate competence in job-related skills in their particular area of work and expertise. It is available through employers and training providers.

Why deliver this qualification
The SVQ in Construction Site Supervision (Construction): Building and Civil Engineering at SCQF level 7 is a re-accredited qualification.
Upon successful completion, learners will gain an internationally recognised qualification which guarantees that they have the skills, knowledge and abilities required to carry out their role successfully. Employers will also benefit from their employees being proficient.
Candidates can progress to a range of qualifications including the SVQ level 4 in Construction Site Management (Construction): Building and Civil Engineering.
Assessment is carried out in the workplace, minimising any time learners would need to be away from their work.
The SVQ can be offered full-time or part-time (eg day-release) or by open and distance learning.
Who does this qualification suit
This SVQ is suitable for people who are currently in employment and who wish to obtain a formal qualification.
Access
Entry is at the discretion of the centre.
Candidates should be in a job or placement where they are carrying out relevant tasks and responsibilities which allow them to gather the required evidence.
No prior ualifications or knowledge are required to undertake this qualification.
Progression
The SVQ level 3 award could provide progression to:
- an SVQ level 4 in Construction Site Management (Construction): Building and Civil Engineering at SCQF level 4
- degree-level study at a higher education institution
- employment in the construction sector, perhaps as a building or civil engineering technician
Approval
Centres with devolved authority for approval should use their own internal approval process.
Centres without devolved authority require to come forward for approval and should contact SQAs Business Development Team for guidance.
Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQAs general requirements for technical/occupational competence as outlined in the Systems and Qualification Approval Guide.
