SVQ Emergency Fire Service: Operations in the Community SCQF level 7
Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs) recognise competence in job-related skills and are based on National Occupational Standards.
This SVQ covers areas such as educating your community to improve awareness of fire and rescue safety matters; taking responsibility for effective performance in fire and rescue; searching for, rescuing and supporting endangered lives; resolving fire and rescue operational incidents; protecting life and the environment from the effects of hazardous materials; and maintaining readiness for fire and rescue operational response.
This qualification has been designed by the Skills for Justice sector skills council to ensure relevancy to the sector.

Why deliver this qualification
Currently, this qualification can only be delivered by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.
Learners will gain an internationally-recognised qualification that demonstrates that they have the skills, knowledge and abilities required to carry out their role successfully. Employers will also benefit from their employees being proficient.
Assessment is carried out in the workplace. This minimises any time learners need to be away from their work.

Who does this qualification suit?
This SVQ is suitable for individuals who are currently employed by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, undertaking the Firefighter Training and Development programme, wherein the achievement of this qualification is a mandatory component of the Firefighter Modern Apprenticeship.
Access
Entry is at the discretion of the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.
Candidates must be in a job or placement where they are carrying out relevant tasks and responsibilities which allow them to gather the required evidence.
Approval
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service is currently the only centre eligible for approval for this qualification.
For centres that are not eligible for approval but want to know more about delivering SQA qualifications and the approval process, please contact SQA’s Business Development Team for guidance.
Assessors and verifiers must be able to meet SQA’s general requirements for technical/occupational competence as outlined in the Systems and Qualification Approval Guide (490 KB). The specific delivery requirements are set out in the assessment strategy.
