5 July 2019 - Changes to assessment and reassessment

SQA sent the following information to Street Works centres on 30 May 2019.

The Highway Authorities Utilities Committee (HAUC UK) is revising Street Works qualifications, which will result in significant changes to assessment.

HAUC UK plan to introduce a new Street Works Assessment Strategy document that will replace both the Street Works Scheme document and the Street Works Reassessment Scheme document.  HAUC UK will update the unit specifications and recording documentation to reflect the requirements of the new assessment strategy.  The proposed implementation date for these changes is now expected to be 1 January 2020.

Changes to the practical units knowledge assessment

From 1 January, candidates undertaking the knowledge assessment will be required to complete the assessment under exam conditions. This will consist of a 20-question multiple-choice test, with a time limit of 45 minutes. Candidates must answer at least 16 questions correctly (80%) to achieve a pass.

The knowledge assessment will also be available as an online assessment. SQA will provide online tests from January 2020 and these will be available through SOLAR – our online assessment platform.

Until 31 December 2020, you will have the option to use paper-based or online assessments with your candidates. However, from 1 January 2021, candidates will be required to complete the online assessment.

Changes to reassessment

At present, candidates who are reassessed are required to complete a 10-question test, with a time limit of 30 minutes. From 1 January, they will be required to sit a 20-question test, with a time limit of 45 minutes. Candidates must answer at least 16 questions correctly (80%) to achieve a pass.

Until 31 December 2020, you will have the option to use paper-based or online assessments with your candidates for the reassessment. However, from 1 January 2021, candidates will be required to complete the online assessment.
