SVQ Hairdressing SCQF level 6

The Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ 3) in Hairdressing at SCQF level 6 allows learners to demonstrate competence in job-related skills in their particular area of work and expertise as a stylist.
This SVQ covers creatively styling and dressing hair, creatively cutting hair using a combination of techniques, creatively colouring and lightening hair, and providing client consultation services.
This qualification has been designed in partnership with Skillsactive/HABIA the sector skills council to ensure relevance to the sector.
SVQs are based on National Occupational Standards. SQA works in partnership with other organisations to ensure that National Occupational Standards (NOS) are relevant to the current and future needs of Scottish industries.
This qualification is available through colleges, employers and training providers.
Qualification Status Approval (Skills Active/Habia)
On Wednesday 5 May 2021, the SQA Accreditation Co-ordination Group (ACG) agreed to approve and note the proposed assessment arrangements for the attached qualifications as detailed in SVQ Habia Statement Temporary Adaptations/Mitigations and Supplementary Guidance (335 KB).
Adaptation required – qualifications which have been identified as requiring a change to the current approved assessment methodologies/requirements to allow delivery and/or assessment.
ACG noted the SVQ Habia Statement (and adaptations) as temporary until 30 June 2022 and will be kept under review.

Why deliver this qualification
Learners will gain an internationally recognised qualification which guarantees that they have the skills, knowledge and abilities required to carry out their role successfully. Employers will also benefit from their employees being proficient.
The SVQ is offered in the workplace. Since assessment is carried out in the workplace this minimises any time learners would need to be away from their work.
Learners can progress to a range of qualifications including HNC Hairdressing.
Who does this qualification suit
This SVQ is suitable for:
- individuals who are currently in employment as a stylist and who wish to obtain a formal qualification
- employees who wish to obtain short, continuing professional development courses
Access
Entry is at the discretion of the centre.
Learners should be in a job or placement where they are carrying out relevant tasks and responsibilities which allow then to gather the required evidence.
No prior qualifications or knowledge are required to undertake this qualification.
Progression
The SCQF level 6 award could provide progression to:
- an HNC in Hairdressing or a related area
Approval
This qualification is non-devolvable.
Centres will have to come forward for approval and should contact SQA's Business Development Team for guidance.

Core Skill mappings are carried out by the SSC responsible for the development of an SVQ. It is a requirement of SQA Accreditation that every SVQ submission includes information on where possible opportunities for candidates to develop Core Skills exist across the mandatory units.
Centres should note that mappings are not audited or validated against the Core Skills framework/units so are not accepted by SQA awarding body as evidence towards achievement of the Core Skills units.
